--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1632\/1052;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although the 7805 regulator is very simple and small the problem is <strong>efficiency<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0 Let&#8217;s assume that we are powering our project with a 9v battery.\u00a0 \u00a0We will also assume that our load is 100mA, and we are using the 7805 regulator to reduce the voltage to 5v.\u00a0 \u00a0 In the 7805 regulator we will have a power loss of 4v (9-5) x 100mA.\u00a0 \u00a0 Our power loss would be 400mW!\u00a0 \u00a0This power must be dissipated in the form of heat, so it&#8217;s a good idea to have a heat sink on the 7805 regulator.<\/p>\n<p>The field device is consuming 500mW, and we are loosing 400mW.\u00a0 \u00a0Since our project is powered by a battery, this would result in the battery running down quickly.\u00a0 It would only last about half the amount of time that we would normally expect.<\/p>\n<h2>DC-DC Buck Converter<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1286 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/buckreg-e1509545243411.jpg\" alt=\"Buck Regulator\" width=\"2113\" height=\"1721\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/buckreg-e1509545243411.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/buckreg-e1509545243411-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/buckreg-e1509545243411-768x626.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/buckreg-e1509545243411-1024x834.jpg 1024w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 2113px) 100vw, 2113px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 2113px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 2113\/1721;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The buck converter works a bit differently.\u00a0 \u00a0It works by switching on and off to provide the desired output voltage.\u00a0 \u00a0 By regulating voltage in this manner, we are not wasting a lot of power.\u00a0 \u00a0The buck converter is much more efficient.\u00a0 \u00a0The buck converter is also adjustable, and can generally give us an output of 1.25v to 30v.\u00a0 \u00a0This depends on the particular converter we get of course.\u00a0 This eliminates the necessity to purchase many different voltage regulators for various projects.<\/p>\n<h2>Cost Advantage<\/h2>\n<p>The price of a 7805 regulator is typically around $.50.\u00a0 \u00a0The cost of a buck regulator is around $2.\u00a0 \u00a0 Even through the buck converter is more expensive, think about the long term cost.\u00a0 \u00a0 If your project is going to be powered by battery, you can definitely save by using a buck converter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;
