{"id":1570,"date":"2018-05-31T00:28:13","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T00:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/?p=1570"},"modified":"2021-08-23T20:32:07","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T20:32:07","slug":"nest-thermostat-e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/31\/nest-thermostat-e\/","title":{"rendered":"Nest Thermostat E"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction to the Nest Thermostat E<\/h2>\n<p>The Nest Thermostat E allows you to automate the heating and cooling systems in your home.\u00a0 \u00a0 With this thermostat, you can view and control your heating and cooling from anywhere in the world!\u00a0 \u00a0 I purchased this thermostat a few months ago, and wanted to share my thoughts with you.\u00a0 This thermostat is less expensive than the standard Nest Learning Thermostat, and has most of the features that anyone would need for it&#8217;s purpose.<\/p><div id=\"bryce-3060453325\" class=\"bryce-afterfirst bryce-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-8316758073402323\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8316758073402323\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"7728240895\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Installing the Nest Thermostat E<\/h2>\n<p>Before removing your old thermostat, be sure power is off to your furnace, and take a picture of the current thermostat.\u00a0 \u00a0 Depending on who wired your thermostat, the color codes might not match up how you would expect.\u00a0 Be sure you know what color wire goes to the corresponding labels on your terminals.\u00a0 \u00a0 On my old thermostat, I had a jumper wire between Rc and Rh that was not needed on the Nest.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1571 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest2-e1527724524749.jpg\" alt=\"Nest Wiring\" width=\"991\" height=\"1036\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest2-e1527724524749.jpg 957w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest2-e1527724524749-287x300.jpg 287w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest2-e1527724524749-768x803.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest2-e1527724524749-980x1024.jpg 980w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 991px) 100vw, 991px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 991px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 991\/1036;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the wiring is very straight forward, and you even have a level on the backplane to be sure you have it straight.\u00a0 Simply press down on the tab for each wiring block, and insert the correct wire.\u00a0 Not all systems are the same, so be sure to consult the nest documentation for your particular system.\u00a0 \u00a0 My thermostat did not require the C (common) wire to be connected.\u00a0 \u00a0I think I will run new 5 conductor cable to the furnace though to help ensure there are no issues later on.<\/p>\n<h2>Powering on the Nest thermostat E<\/h2>\n<p>Once the wiring is complete, you can place the thermostat onto it&#8217;s backplane.\u00a0 \u00a0When it boots up, you will have a few menu questions to answer, such as the language, your type of heating\/cooling systems, and your wifi connection information.\u00a0 This went very smoothly when I installed my thermostat.\u00a0 \u00a0However, i installed a thermostat for my mother, and the battery was reading low.\u00a0 \u00a0With a low battery, the thermostat will not connect to wifi.\u00a0 \u00a0I also noticed the display only turns on when you change a setting on the Nest.\u00a0 \u00a0Normally, I have the display set to activate when someone walks by..\u00a0 \u00a0After leaving the thermostat plugged in until the next day, the thermostat was charged, and could be set up just fine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1572 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest1-e1527724998759.jpg\" alt=\"Nest thermostat E\" width=\"1052\" height=\"1081\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest1-e1527724998759.jpg 973w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest1-e1527724998759-292x300.jpg 292w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest1-e1527724998759-768x789.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nest1-e1527724998759-997x1024.jpg 997w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1052px) 100vw, 1052px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1052px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1052\/1081;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You will notice by design, the Nest Thermostat E has a &#8220;Frosty&#8221; appearance.\u00a0 \u00a0 By turning the outer circle clockwise or counter-clockwise, you can set the temperature.\u00a0 \u00a0 The setup menu can be accessed by pressing the &#8220;nest&#8221; button on the front.<\/p>\n<h2>Using the Web to control your Nest.<\/h2>\n<p>When you sign up for an account on nest.com, you will need to add your nest device.\u00a0 \u00a0This will ask for a code from your nest.\u00a0 \u00a0This ensures that you are adding the right nest thermostat to your account.\u00a0 \u00a0During setup, you have the option to generate this code.\u00a0 \u00a0If you have a nest that is already set up, you can generate a new code by pressing the configuration button on the front of your nest.\u00a0 \u00a0 Then just go to the &#8220;gear&#8221; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 636\/631;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now you can control the temperature on your thermostat from anywhere!\u00a0 \u00a0Notice the up and down buttons at the bottom of the circle area that shows the temperature setting.\u00a0 \u00a0 Those are hard to see sometimes, depending on what device you are using.<\/p>\n<p>You can also access other settings by clicking the gear icon in the app or in the web browser.(shown on the upper right).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1575 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nestgear.png\" alt=\"nest gear\" width=\"536\" height=\"228\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nestgear.png 536w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nestgear-300x128.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 536px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 536\/228;\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Other Integrations<\/h2>\n<p>Nest has an app that you can install on many phones, which is a nice feature.\u00a0 \u00a0This makes your thermostat easier to control from anywhere in the world, and monitor the temperature inside of the house.<\/p>\n<p>Another nice feature is that the thermostat will interface with the Echo Dot.\u00a0 \u00a0You just add the skill and link it to your account.\u00a0 \u00a0With the Amazon Echo, you can then say things like &#8220;Alexa, set the temperature to 77 degrees&#8221;.\u00a0 \u00a0A few seconds later, you will see the temperature setting on your thermostat change.\u00a0 I used to use IFTTT to control the fan, however, if you are using a Google account, this is no longer an option that I&#8217;m aware of.\u00a0 Google is discontinuing the &#8220;Works With Nest&#8221;
