When the switch closes, it creates a path for the voltage on a terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Status Indicators<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/discreteinputstatus-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"DiscreteInputStatus\" class=\"wp-image-529 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/discreteinputstatus-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/discreteinputstatus-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/discreteinputstatus.jpg 369w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When we shut a switch, a voltage returns back to a terminal on the discrete input module. \u00a0 The status light will then energize. \u00a0When the status light energizes, a logical 1  in the memory location for that terminal. \u00a0The programmer knows what switch the terminal connects to. \u00a0 \u00a0The programmer will\u00a0then use this input in logic to know if an even has taken place on the system, such as a valve being open or shut. \u00a0You will also find an OK status light. \u00a0 When this is solid green, the modules is active and communicating. \u00a0 A solid red OK light indicates a possible hardware failure in the module. \u00a0 On the right side of the module, you will see a locking tab. \u00a0 \u00a0The purpose of the locking tab is to prevent the RTB (Removable Terminal Block) from coming off of the module.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of the input module as a group of &#8220;voltage testers&#8221;.  We either have voltage to a terminal or we don&#8217;t.  That is what the I\/O status lights indicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Removable Terminal Block (RTB)<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/discreteremovable-150x150.png\" alt=\"Input RTB\" class=\"wp-image-599 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The terminal block is removable. \u00a0 \u00a0To remove the terminal block for wiring the module, be sure the locking tab is in the unlocked position. \u00a0 The locking tab is at the top of the module on the right side. \u00a0There is nothing electronic about this tab. \u00a0It just locks the terminal block into place, so we cannot inadvertently remove it. \u00a0 Once the RTB (removable terminal block) has been removed from the module, a sleeve will slide off the RTB as shown. \u00a0 This will allow for easy access to the terminals for the purpose of wiring the module.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important to realize that you can &#8220;key&#8221; the terminal blocks as well.  In other words, you can put &#8220;tabs&#8221; onto the RTB.  This ensures that you don&#8217;t inadvertently connect the wrong terminal block to a module.  This is particularly useful when someone removes more than one RTB at a time.  Putting RTBs back onto the wrong module could have disastrous results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary of ControlLogix Input Modules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, the input module detects if voltage is present with respect to common.  Status lights will indicate where we have a voltage.  This is usually due to a switch in the field being shut.  When a terminal has voltage, we will see a logical 1 in it&#8217;s corresponding controller tag.
