All tags for all modules in this chassis will begin with the word &#8220;Local&#8221; in the Controller Tag Database.<\/p><div id=\"bryce-1292299405\" class=\"bryce-afterfirst bryce-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-8316758073402323\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8316758073402323\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"7728240895\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We will be adding a connection to our Local Input and Local output modules. &nbsp;The processor needs to read the status of the inputs that we have wired to the Input modules, and control outputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presently, processor is in Slot 0. &nbsp;Count the slots, and you will find that the Input module resides in slot 5. &nbsp; The Output module resides in slot 6. &nbsp; At your location, the I\/O modules could be in any slot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gather the information<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"124\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/CLXIOArrowsLocal-300x124.jpg\" alt=\"LocalChassisArrows\" class=\"wp-image-615 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/124;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Studio 5000 is going to ask for a name of each module. &nbsp;In addition to this name, we need to know the slot number, the firmware revision, and the catalog number. &nbsp; Use RSWHO, and look at the properties to get the firmware revision of each module. &nbsp; Another method to get the firmware revision is to enter the IP address into your web browser. &nbsp; Once you see the status page for the Ethernet module, click &#8220;Browse Chassis&#8221;. &nbsp;In this case, I&#8217;ve found the following information about each module:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"><strong>Slot# &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Name &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Catalog # &nbsp; &nbsp; Revision<\/strong>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;5 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;  LocalInput &nbsp; &nbsp; 1756-IB16 &nbsp; &nbsp; 2.6\n  &nbsp;6 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; LocalOutput   &nbsp;1756-OB16E&nbsp;   2.4\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add the Input module<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"239\" height=\"87\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/backplanenewmodule.png\" alt=\"BackplaneNewModule\" class=\"wp-image-616 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 239px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 291\/159;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Next, select the major revision. &nbsp;The major revision is the part of the revision that is before the &#8220;.&#8221; in the revision number. &nbsp;In our case, this is 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, press OK again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, you see the 1756-IB16 Configuration box. &nbsp; Name the module &#8220;LocalInput&#8221;. &nbsp;The module is in slot 5 (in our case). &nbsp;The minor revision is 6. &nbsp;Here, &nbsp;I&#8217;ll choose &#8220;Compatible Keying&#8221;. &nbsp; There are three options for electronic keying: &nbsp;Disable (any revision will work as a replacement). &nbsp;Exact Match: The module can only be replaced with a version 2.6. &nbsp; If you choose &#8220;Compatible Keying&#8221;, the module can only be replaced with a version 2.6 or higher. &nbsp;Once everything is set up, press OK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: &nbsp;modules can be upgraded to a new revision using the ControlFlash utility.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"561\" height=\"315\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ib16dialog.png\" alt=\"IB16 Dialog\" class=\"wp-image-620 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ib16dialog.png 561w, https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/ib16dialog-300x168.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 561px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 292\/158;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Still, the OB16E has a major revision of 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next we see the dialog box for adding the 1756-OB16E module. &nbsp;Name the module &#8220;LocalOutput&#8221;. &nbsp; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 515\/135;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>To test your work, <strong>disconnect any prime movers<\/strong>, and download to your processor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u00a0Click Communications | Who Active<\/li><li>Browse for your <strong>PROCESSOR<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select your <strong>PROCESSOR<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click &#8220;Download&#8221;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure the processor is in Remote Run (REM RUN) mode, and open Local:5:I.Data. \u00a0 Here you an test your switches to see if they respond in the Controller Tag Database. \u00a0To test outputs, open Local:6:O.Data, and manually place the value of 1 into the Controller tag (assuming we don&#8217;t have any logic yet). \u00a0 The output should energize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary of ControlLogix Local I\/O<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that we must add a connection to any module we wish to use in our project.  It&#8217;s important to realize that all tags for modules in the local chassis will be begin with the name &#8220;Local&#8221;.   Obviously, you can set up <a href=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/index.php\/2017\/05\/28\/controllogix-aliasing\/\">aliasing<\/a>, but the base tags will start with the name local.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before adding the modules, be sure you know the slot numbers and firmware revisions.  If the module is new out of the box, then you can simply look at the sticker on the side of the module.  On the other hand, if a module is not sealed in the box, we aren&#8217;t sure of the firmware revision.  You can usually change the firmware revision of most any ControlLogix module using the <a href=\"https:\/\/bryceautomation.com\/index.php\/2017\/05\/28\/controlflash\/\">ControlFlash<\/a> utility.  There are a couple of ways to know what a module&#8217;s revision is for sure.  One way is to go to the properties of the module in the RSWHo screen in RSLinx.  The other way is to use your web browser.
